Busitema Fund (SMC) Limited

Busitema University Fund (SMC) limited is a company limited by guarantee under the sole ownership of Busitema University Council. It was legally incorporated on October 3, 2018. The management of the company is vested in the Board of Directors duly appointed by the University Council.

The major objective of the company is to commercialize the assets of the university with the sole aim of raising revenues to subsidize government funding to the University. The company manages the University’s extensive assets which include; properties, projects and enterprises either directly or indirectly through subsidiaries.

Governance

The company is governed by the Board of Directors appointed by the University Council which comprises different qualification skills, experiences, and expertise, independent knowledge of the company and operating environment, all based on gender Diversity.
The hierarchy is as follows:

University Council

University Council is the sole owner of the company and it function through one Board comprising three different committees

Board of Directors

The Board is responsible for the over role administration of the Company and ensuring due implementation of the objects and functions of the company. The Board of Directors comprises different stakeholders, among them prominent public and business individual, and are the representation of the University Council. The board functions through three different committees, among them are Planning and Investment Committee, Human Resource and Administration, and Finance Audit and Risk Committee.

Management of the Company

This is a composition of officers of the company appointed by the Board of Directors for the purpose of spearheading the strategic and administrative operations of the company.

  • Through the company, the University expenditure on vehicle service and maintenance has greatly reduced from the previous high budget the university had been running.
  • Several projects have been developed and approved by the University through the company which is a move towards self-sustenance by the University.

Projects

Auto-garage

The Company runs an auto-garage that offers vehicle repair and service. It also a runs a car wash bay on site.

Solar

This project stems from a bilateral agreement between Ministry of Energy and Mineral development of the republic of Uganda, and Ministry of Electricity and Renewal energy of the Arab Republic of Egypt for the operation to establish 4MW photovoltaic power plant. Busitema University was selected as a site and consequently MOU was signed between the ministry of Energy and Busitema University. Busitema University Fund (SMC) limited therefore is running this project on behalf of the University.

Sericulture

Sericulture is the rearing of silk worms for the production of silk products. This project is the collaboration between ministry of science technology and innovation, Uganda National Council for science and technology (UNSCT), Tropical Institute for Development and Innovations (TRIDI), and Busitema University.

Multi-business complex centre

This involves the construction of multi-purpose business complex centre at Buistema University under a public private partnership arrangement (PPP). This project will include facilities such as guest houses, pharmacies, salon, and hair dressing, camping sites, ICT technology solutions, among others.

Printery

The Company is in the process of installing a printer at Busitema main campus. This is expected to meet the printing needs of the University and neighboring communities.

Facilities

The Company has a service bay with 2 inspection pits and a shed with 2 functional fluorescent tubes. It has three adjacent rooms which serve for office accommodation, stores for spares, oils and removes service of parts.
