Fine tuning the Similarity index:
When creating assignments, Instructors have the ability to exclude quoted material and bibliographies from the Similarity Report. Doing so may lower the similarity index (percentage) of the Similarity Report.
When an instructor chooses to "exclude quotes," our system will recognize quotes by the use of double quotation marks, or paragraph indentations in a Microsoft Word® document. Single quotations are not recognized as quotes, unless they are quotes inside of quotes of a passage.
Excluding the bibliography section:
When you choose to exclude bibliographies, Turnitin will detect the following key words and disregard matches in the paper after that point:
- reference
- references
- references cited
- references and notes
- resources
- bibliography
- works cited
Alternately, when the system detects the following words it will restart the Similarity check:
- appendix
- appendices
- glossary
- table
- tables
- acknowledgment
- acknowledgments
- acknowledgement
- exhibits
- acknowledgements
- figure
- figures
- chart

Regarding the colour coding of the similarity index, please see the key to the matches below:
