Course Unit Description

Data c6mmunication is a rigorous treatment of advance topics in the technology of communicating digital information over public and private communication facilities. Topics to be covered includes data signals(timing, codes); simple data communications; simple, duplex, semi-duplex, telephone lines, modems, multiplexers and concentrator, circuit switching, message switching, packet switching standard and protocols: OSI model, basic concepts, band width, protocols, architecture, types of network- LAN,MAN,WAN, Internet, extranet, Internet, peripheral and data communication equipment.

Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are to:

  • Introduce the student to advance communication methods in high speed computer networks
  • Impart to student practical skills to design, install and manage a wireless LAN
  • Expose the student to mobile communication system(GSM)
  • Introduce student to high speed networks
  • To introduce basic terminologies used in computer networks and data communications
  • To enable student, understand mechanisms/operations of networks

Expected Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this course unit, the students should be able:

  • To Apply advance communication methods in high speed computer networks
  • To Design, Install and manage a wireless LAN
  • Design and implement high speed networks
  • Demonstrate high knowledge in mobile communication systems
  • To explain  basic terms used in data communication and computer networks
  • To articulate how computer networks and data communications operate
