Course Unit Description

This course is designed to prepare the learner for careers in biological and industrial sciences.  It explores the characteristics, structure, reproduction and impact to humans by micro-organisms.

Course objectives 
By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  • Describe bacterial morphology, staining reactions, colony characteristics, growth and diagnostic biochemical reactions.
  • Describe symptoms of viral infections in affected plant shoots.
  • Describe the life – cycle of sporulating fungi.
  • State the economic, medical and industrial importance of fungi, bacteria and viruses.

Expected outcomes

  • Graduates who can be trained to work in fields involving microorganisms. E.g. plant pathology in agriculture, food microbiology, water purification and safety.
