Course Unit Description

This unit exposes students to the theory and application of methods in teaching social studies. It also focuses on desirable skills to be developed among the learners. 

Course Objectives
By the end of this unit, students should be able to:

  • Describe the origin and development of Social Studies in the world and in Uganda
  • Explain the reasons for the Introduction of Social Studies
  • Identify, compare and contrast the Social Studies aims and nation goals plus educational goals
  • Gain a deeper understanding of and skills in applying different approaches, methods, strategies and techniques of teaching/learning Social Studies; and 
  • Develop (acquire) and teach Social Studies skills more competently

Learning out comes
By the end of the course unit participants will be able to:

  • Identify and describe methods and techniques suitable for teaching social studies
  • Analyses social studies skills that need to developed in a learner 
  • Evaluates the roles and responsibilities of a teacher in effective social studies teaching and learning
