BAG1101 Crop Production Practices and Post Harvest Technoloty
Course Unit Description
This course unit focuses on the technical aspects of crop production. Classroom, laboratory and practical instructional strategies are used to combine theoretical approach and the “learning by doing” philosophy. In addition, a component of a short-term enterprise project development is integrated to enable learners put to use the knowledge and theory for relevant, practical, experiential agricultural learning projects. Done as a group activity, the enterprise project will also provide skills in leadership, teamwork, problem solving communication and personal reflection, which are drivers of successful agribusiness.
Course objectives
This course focuses on:
- Providing knowledge and skills that enable learners to demonstrate and practically engage in profitable and sustainable crop production
- Enabling learners to appreciate crop agriculture can be undertaken as a business
Learning outcomes
By the end of this course a student should be able to:
- Explain the basics of planning and organization of a commercial crop enterprise or farm
- Discuss the different crop production systems in Uganda and describe agronomic practices for key food and cash crops in Uganda
- Make a coarse choice of a suitable crop enterprise or mix of enterprises for investment
- Demonstrate a good understanding of post-harvest handling of farm produce, including drying, storage, primary processing and value addition
