Course Unit Description

This course gives an insight of food nutrients, beverages and or supplements needed for optimal performance in sporting events. The student will gain practical experience on how nutrition plays a role in how the body functions and performs during sporting events 

Course objectives
At the end of this course the learner will be able to:
Gain knowledge in general metabolic principles, primarily fuel sources for the working muscles during exercise

  • Developing knowledge of macronutrient principles of sports nutrition for different types of athletes based on their goals, specifically related to energy and recovery
  • Be knowledgeable of hydration guidelines for safety and performance
  • Be familiar with micro needs of athletes
  • Be able to evaluate dietary supplements for effectiveness and safety
  • Be familiar with nutritional impact on brain, bones, connective tissue and immune function
  • Understand the role of nutrition in injury recovery
  • Be knowledgeable in using nutrition and physical activity to manage weight 
  • Assess current athletes’ intake and develop a sports nutrition plan

Learning Outcomes 

  • To develop an understanding of the appropriate nutrition practices in relation to exercise or sport training to promote health, energy and adaptations.
