Course Unit Description

This course unit examines the origin and introduction of physical education and how it has evolved to present times. It analyses the role of PE in the ancient societies via avis present modern world.

Course objectives
By the end of the course, participants should be able to:

  • Trace the historical origins of physical education
  • Compare the role of physical education in ancient societies with modern societies today
  • Explain local and international implications and national challenges in the development of physical education and sport in Uganda. 
  • Assess the impact of the British, French and missionary to ancient and modern physical education and sport to the world and Uganda
  • Develop strategies to address the problems and challenges of teaching physical education in primary schools of Uganda
  • Describe the structures of teaching Physical education in Uganda
  • Define, describe and differentiate physical education, sport and play

Learning Outcomes 
By the end of this course should able to;

  • Acquaint themselves with the origin, evolution and development of Physical Education
  • Apply the knowledge of Olympism in organizing various sport activities. 
  • Distinguish the functional operations on National and International Olympic Federations.  Analyze the concepts and issues pertaining to Physical Education 
  • Formulate the principles, philosophy and concepts about Physical Education
  • Assess current status, problems and challenges in the context of global change in physical education and sport and rationale for its application in primary schools of Uganda
  • Illuminate the crucial role that physical education plays in the development of lifelong physical activity habits
