Course Unit Description

The course is designed to aid engineers in rational decision-making using concepts of micro economics as applied in engineering. It introduces concepts that bring to the forefront the role of engineering and engineers in solving economic problems.

Course Objectives
This course aims at providing students with knowledge and understanding about:

  • Time value of money as the fundamental concept underlying all financial activities
  • Quantification of profits since it is the central target of most projects
  • Developing and interpreting income and cash flow statements
  • Cost estimation in designing and developing cost sensitive projects

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course students should be able to:

  • Appreciate the role of economics in engineering decision making
  • Identify, define, and evaluate problems in communities
  • Appreciate the role of engineering and engineers in solving economic problems
  • Analyze the economic aspects of the engineering problem
  • Apply the basics of book keeping and financial analysis to solve business problems
