Course Unit Description

This course provides an understanding of the techniques and tools needed to construct and analyze performance models of computer systems and communication networks.

Course objectives
After finishing this course, a student will:

  • Obtain the fundamental theoretical analysis techniques including probability, stochastic and queuing network techniques;
  • Be able to use several useful simulation and modelling tools (including both Matlab and NS2) to conduct basic performance modelling and network simulation tasks;
  • Understand how to conduct their own performance analysis in the future by learning many classic examples of performance analysis in real-world computer and networking applications.

Learning Outcomes
After successful completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Select appropriate evaluation techniques, performance metrics and workloads for a system
  • Conduct performance measurements correctly using appropriate measuring tools
  • Use proper statistical techniques to compare several network alternatives
  • Design measurement and simulation experiments to provide the most information with the least effort.
  • Perform simulations correctly
  • Use simple analytical models to analyse the network performance
