Course Unit Description

This course covers the fundamentals of signal and system analysis, focusing on representations of discrete-time and continuous-time signals, and representations of linear, time-invariant systems. Emphasis is on the use of mathematical models as a direct result of attempting to use them in system analysis.

Course Objective(s)

  • This course aims to introduce the mathematical tools for analysing signals and systems in the time and frequency domains, and provide a basis for applying these techniques in control and communications engineering.

Learning Outcomes
Upon completion, students will be able to:

  • Characterize and manipulate linear time-invariant systems in terms of input-output relationships, using both time and frequency domain methods.
  • Understand and develop simple mathematical models for representing signals and systems.
  • Understand the relationship between time and frequency domain models of dynamic systems.
  • Convert time-domain models into frequency domain models and vice versa.
  • Understand the relationship between continuous-time and discrete-time models.
  • Build a mathematical model from a real-life problem related to signals and systems.
