Course Unit Description
This course is designed to provide the students with an overview of the concepts and principles of entrepreneurship and small business management. It uses concepts involved in the major functional areas of business and develops them within the framework of the small business.
Objectives of the course
This course is intended to enable students to:
- Have the appropriate background, both theoretical and applied, to appreciate the working environment of the typical small business;
- Gain an understanding of how to establish and manage a small business;
- Create a business plan for a new business venture.
Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Understand various start-up methods, including buying an existing business, franchising, or taking over family firm
- Establish a comprehensive perspective from which to approach the varied aspects of small business management and entrepreneurship
- Incorporate, and build upon, many functional areas of business study so as to establish their relevance to the small business environment
- Use sharpened analytical skills required in the several functional areas (finance, accounting, production, marketing, operations research, etc.) in dealing with problems of the total small business organization; and
- Use appropriate research tools in order to gather the necessary information about a small business and the market and/or sector they operate in.
