Course Unit Description

This course is designed to provide the students with an overview of the concepts and
principles of entrepreneurship and business management. It is also designed to give the student the appropriate background, both theoretical and applied, to appreciate the working environment of the typical small business. The course describes entrepreneurship as a process of economic or social value creation, rather than the single event of opening a business. It   focuses on opportunity recognition, assembly of the financial and human resources needed to develop the idea, and launching the new venture. The course is intended to enable students to:

  • Gain knowledge of the context, concepts and process of entrepreneurship; 
  • Be better able to conceive and develop entrepreneurial opportunities;
  • Be able to determine the feasibility of a new business concept; 
  • Develop familiarity with business plans; and
  • Learn basic skills regarding how to turn an innovative idea into a real business.

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Gain an understanding about the role of entrepreneurs in our free enterprise society;
  • Discover what entrepreneurs do, learn about trends that shape the future for entrepreneurship relevant to job creation, 
  • Compare and contrast personal attributes, and use technology to facilitate business decisions and basic operation; 
  • Learn how to negotiate, calculate return on investment, perform cost/benefit analysis, and keep track of income and expenses; and
  • Identify their own personal entrepreneurial potential, ability, and competences.  
  • Recognize and evaluate business opportunities under dynamic economic settings; and
  • Gain first hand experience of staring a new venture by developing a business plan.
