Course Unit Description


This course introduces the pig production industry, enabling the student to be a commercial pig farmer or an accomplished adviser to the pig farming communities.

 

Course objective

  • To train the students in the various pig rearing systems.
  • To equip students with skills in assessment of swine production systems and problems.
  • To train students in swine value addition  and marketing.
  • To train students on assessement of pig industry performance 
  • To train students on economics of pig farming 

Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the student should be able to:

  • Know the global and regional trends in the pig industry
  • Appreciate special aspects pig husbandry practices such as  housing ,  nutrition and disease control
  • Set up a pig farm and manage  a pig farm
  • Know the economics of pig farming
  • Be able to evaluate the performance of pig farm
