Course Unit Description
This course presents the practical and theoretical aspects of Animal genetics and breeding; including selection, problems of in-breeding, cross-breeding as well as breeding methods.
Course Objectives
- To enable students explain the concepts of animal breeding and selection
- To enable students explain the role of Mendelian genetics in livestock production improvement.
- To enable students appreciate the role of molecular genetics in livestock improvement.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, learners should be able to:
- Apply genetic principles in the improvement of animal health and production
- Identify animals with undesirable recessive alleles for currying.
- Select animals with desirable breeding and production traits.
- Apply breeding methods and breeding tools in Livestock improvement
