Course Unit Description

This course introduces the students to the concepts of the role of livestock in rural development. It highlights gender aspects as they relate to livestock industry. Livestock-environment Interactions and the role of policy objectives in environmental protection and livestock production will also be explored. 

Course Objectives

  • To explain the role of gender in animal production systems
  • To explain the role of livestock in rural development and socio economic transformation
  • To impart knowledge on the biophysical effects of livestock on the environment
  • 4To acquaint students with the role of policy objectives in environmental protection and livestock production
  • To explain the concept of poverty and development

Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, learners should be able to:

  • Explain the role of animal resources and their role in economic development
  • Relate the role of gender to livestock production and rural development 
  • Discuss the concept of  livestock-environment interactions
  • Describe the socio-economic implications of policies in animal production. 
  • To discuss the concept of poverty and development in Uganda and sub-Saharan Africa
