Course Unit Description

This course will involve aspects of production and management of poultry and includes introduction to poultry management; economic importance of poultry; poultry breeds; systems of poultry management; poultry housing; reproduction in birds; stages of growth of birds; incubation and the hatching process; brooding; preparation of poultry products for marketing and poultry health.

 

Course objective

  • The major objective of this course unit is to equip learners with essential theoretical and practical skills to enable them start up or promote poultry production as an agribusiness enterprise.

Learning outcomes
By the end of this course unit, the learner should be able to:

  • Appreciate the role of poultry in economic development
  • Understand the basic factors necessary for starting up a poultry enterprise and factors that favour the poultry industry in Uganda
  • Understand the problems facing poultry farmers in Uganda and possible solutions
  • Practically start up or advice a farmer on how to start up a simple poultry enterprise and manage it well basing on the solid theoretical and practical skills gained from this course unit.
