Course Description:
This course provides a comprehensive overview of critical aspects of maritime communication systems and safety procedures. Students will explore key topics including radio propagation, marine radio communication equipment, distress urgency and safety communication, and the maintenance of marine radio equipment. Through a blend of theoretical instruction and hands-on practice, participants will develop a solid understanding of the principles underpinning effective maritime communication. At the end of this course, a student can:

  • Discuss the GDMSS concept and its operational areas.
  • Discuss the general features and principles of the maritime mobile and maritime mobile-satellite service.
  • Explain the Inmarsat system and maritime mobile-satellite service.
  • Explain the general guidance in the principles and operation of DSC, NBDP, Inmarsat, NAVTEX, and EPIRBS equipment.
  • Describe the procedures to be used for emergency communications to and from GDMSS vessels as well as routine testing. Describe the general procedures to be followed for basic maintenance of battery-fitted equipment and ship station equipment.
