Course Unit Description

This course unit is an introductory course to curriculum studies. It is meant to provide teacher trainees with the theoretical background and understanding of the field of curriculum at policy and practice level.


Course objectives

  • The general objective of this course is to enable teacher trainees to conceptualize, analyze and critique the school curriculum as well as appreciate their role in its implementation. 

Specific objectives

  • Explain the concept of curriculum and its implication to the classroom teacher.
  • Explain the components of the curriculum and show how they relate to education
  • Examine the various elements of a curriculum and their application in the classroom and the school system.
  • Analyze the determinants of a curriculum and their implication to curriculum design.
  • Critiquing the different curriculum designs and models, and how they influence the education system.
  • To appreciate the role of different curriculum designs/ patterns in the achieving the national and individual educational goals.

Expected learning outcomes
This course unit is expected to produce graduates who are competent enough to:

  • Relate the curriculum to their activities as teachers
  • Show the link between the curriculum and education
  • Critique and recommend for an appropriate curriculum models of design to address Uganda’s education challenges.
  • Analyze various commonly used models of curriculum design and their application in the schooling system in Uganda.
