Course Unit Description
The goal of the basic medical skills course is for each medical student to acquire knowledge and skills in achieving proficiency and competence in the fundamental skills of medical practice. The course also focuses on history taking, physical assessment skills in different medical conditions in different departments of medicine.
The course will be taught in the simulation Laboratory and skills Laboratory to provide students the basic clinical skills before the clinical rotations which are done in the next semester
Course objectives
By the end of this course, the students should be able to;
- Describe the conceptual frameworks and system theories of medicine.
- Describe basic medical skills necessary for each medical student to achieve proficiency and competence of becoming a doctor.
- Teach skills of effective communication used in medical practice
- Describe history taking methods in each clinical discipline.
- Demonstrate clinical examination techniques in each clinical discipline.
- Demonstrate relevant procedures used in each clinical discipline.
- Explain use of simulation in teaching clinical medicine
- Demonstrate skills and knowledge in identifying patients requiring urgent or emergent care, and initiate evaluation and management.
- Common conditions requiring first aid and develop first aid skills
