Course Unit Description

This is an introductory course to the community. It serves to prepare students for their Community Based Education activities by introducing them to the organization of the health services and the different health providers. The course also helps to introduce students to strategies for entry into the community.  This course also introduces the students to epidemiology of common conditions and applying based biostatics principles to health care. They will have hands on experience on obtaining and utilizing important demographic characteristics from patients and the community at large.  
 
Course objectives 

By the end of the course students should be able to;  

  • Describe the strategies for entry in the community 
  • Explain the determinants of health in the community 
  • Explain the different health providers and the heath seeking behavior of the community 
  • Explain the concepts of a community, its organization and resources 
  • Describe the role of the principles of epidemiology, biostatistics and demography in health delivery 
  • Describe the process and utilization of health management information system.  
  • Design instruments of collecting data
