PHY7104: Research Methods in Physics
Course Unit Title
PHY7104: Research Methods in Physics
Course Unit Description
This course starts by reviewing measurements of physical quantities with their errors. Then, various experimental designs and data analysis methods are discussed with practical exercises for measurements, data analysis and report writing. The course also covers computer methods and applications in physics research.
Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are to:
- Design suitable experiment for the measurement of some physical parameter.
- Collect and analyze experimental data, giving errors involved.
- Write a research report and a paper for publication.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- Design experiments and measure physical parameters
- Apply statistical tools to reduce and analyze research data
- Write computer programs to model physical phenomena
- Write research reports/findings and papers for publication
