Course Unit Description

This course involves the study of farming systems in which woody perennials (free and shrubs) are deliberately grown under the same land management with agricultural crops or animals where they are both ecologically and economically interacting. It also involves the rearing and production of silk worm and mulberry.

Course Objectives
To explain agro forestry and entomo-forestry practices that can be used improve land use and earn income.

Learning outcomes
At the end of this course the students should be able to: 

  • Explain the concept of agroforestry as a sustainable land use system.
  • Explain and compare different agroforestry systems
  • Raise and manage of tree nurseries for establishment for various agroforestry systems
  • Identify and explain factors that influence the adoption of agro forestry in Uganda
  • Rear and manage silk worms for cocoon production
  • Rear bees for honey, wax and other products
