MID8211 Research Methods
Course Unit Description
The course provides students with knowledge and practice in identification of a research problem, data collection (both qualitative and quantitative), analysis, interpretation, presentation and reporting as well as provide appropriate recommendations based on research findings. The course serves as a foundation for preparation of research projects and theses as well as providing capacity to organize and develop bankable engineering projects.
Course Objectives
- To equip students with skills to carry out individual or team research work according to scientific requirements.
- To enable students to make effective presentations in scientific seminars, workshops and conferences; utilize modern ICT audiovisual aids and equipment; moderate discussions and evaluate presentations.
- To enable students to prepare research papers including bankable projects.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the students are able to:
- Identify and describe researchable ideas, projects and themes.
- Define research problems, specify methods for carrying out a scientific research and demonstrate possession of skills and attitudes to conduct such research.
- Analyze data using approved scientific methodologies and tools.
- Present research results in a systematic and objective manner.
- Interpret the research findings and provide appropriate recommendations.
