Course Unit Description

This course introduces students to basic principles of boat maintenance, propulsion and safety at sea through appropriate use of deck equipments. Navigation covers chart work and compass reading. Emphasis is put on ability of holding a course, plotting position using land marks and bearings, maintaining the boats’/ships’ logs, measurement of its speed and use of Sextant as well as understanding the economies of running and maintaining a ship.

Learning Objectives 
By the end of the course, students will be able to;

  • Learn about the basic navigation systems utilized by small-scale fishermen
  • Learn about how to operate the simple navigation devices 
  • Learn about how to use the navigation charts 

Learning outcomes
Upon completion, students’ should be able to:

  • Understand and know the equipment involved in navigation and seamanship
  • Man any fishing vessel operating in inland waters and coastal areas. 
  • Using knowledge from the course unit, be able to direction and guide navigation using  the navigational chart.
