Course Unit Description
Fisheries Economics and management looks at economic analysis and issues based on stock population dynamics, with focus on biological details. Aspects of fisheries management are viewed from an ecosystem perspective with a broad bio economic framework. The traditional areas of fisheries economics, covering topics such as open access, optimal and managed fisheries utilization are analyzed using bio economic models. The course provides students with an integrated vision of the factors shaping fish markets and the related regulatory frameworks.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, the student will be;
- Equipped with fundamental principles and tools useful in addressing fisheries management challenges.
- Equipped with information about the current approaches to fisheries management.
- Equipped with knowledge about models and be able to derive fish harvests levels of stocks that can sustainably lead to optimum harvesting levels for any fishery.
- Equipped with knowledge about the various processes along the fish value chain and methods of fish preservation.
- Able to explain the inter-dependence and integrated nature of the fishing industry with other economic sectors.
