SEE8209 Nuclear Energy Systems
Course Unit Title
SEE8209 Nuclear Energy Systems
Course Unit Description
This elective course covers details of nuclear power systems. Students will already have had more than working knowledge on nuclear energy from EEM1101. They will now focus on acquiring cutting edge expertise on design, operation and maintenance of the systems. They will focus on reactor dynamics and safety of nuclear power stations. Case studies of nuclear reactor accidents will be used in a PBL approach to make them appreciate the importance of a safety conscience in nuclear power.
Aims
- To expose students to latest practical developments and analytical nethods in nuclear power systems
- To prepare students for intensive research on an issue in nuclear power technology
Learning Outcomes
- Students formulate and solve equations for neutron generation and absorption in different types of reactors
- Students do detailed thermodynamic analyses of nuclear power generation plants
- Students are able to compare life cycle costs of nuclear power plants with those of non nuclear, having comparable power outputs
- Students understand the safety codes in nuclear engineering, and the legalities of nuclear and non proliferation treaties.
- Students display technical leadership qualities when in a group of well informed technical experts
