Course Unit Description

This compulsory course covers the dynamic behaviour of energy systems. It looks at mathematical modelling of transient and steady state operation of these systems and the limitations of such modelling.

Aims

  • To provide students with fundamental understanding of mathematical methods and computational techniques necessary for solving energy related problems
  • To equip students with hands-on experience in the use of mathematical software such as MATLAB, Scilab, etc.
  • To help students appreciate the relationship between physical systems and mathematical models
  • Introduce students to key properties of numerical methods such as stability and convergence.

Learning Outcomes

  • Students formulate equations representing  energy generating and consuming systems
  • Students use computational techniques as a guide to solutions of energy problems
  • Students appreciate the limitations of numerical solutions vis-à-vis experimental data
