Course Unit Description

Learning theories with respect to primary mathematics to include discussion of:  Ausubel, Bruner, Dienes, Gagnes, Piaget, and Skemp. Gender differences in learning mathematics, girls and boys readiness to learn mathematics. Mixed ability teaching in primary Schools:  the gifted child, slow learners. Assessment of mathematics to include: reasons/objectives of assessment, formative and summative evaluation, validity and reliability of assessment, different models for continuous assessment, how to write tests and marking guides; variables affecting mathematics education in Uganda Primary Schools.

Course Objectives
By the end of the course, the student teacher should be able to:

  • Identify the implications of learning theories to teaching and learning of Mathematics.
  • Identify the factors of gender bias in teaching and learning of mathematics and strategies to offset them;
  • Carryout meaningful assessment in their work and develop an investigative spirit of classroom situation problems.
