Course Unit Description

This course focuses on the application of GIS in natural resource management. It seeks to give students an understanding of the key principles of GIS and remote sensing for practical understanding of the application of GIS and Rs for visualisation and analysis through both theoretical and practical activities.

Course Objectives
At the end of this module, typical students should be able to:

  • explain the key concepts and techniques in GIS through their practical experience and exposure to state-of-the-art software
  • demonstrate a deeper understanding of the relative strengths and weaknesses of various spatial data structures such as vector and raster encoding, object-oriented, topological and non-topological storage formats
  • create efficient and effective geo-databases using data input from digital and manual sources
  • use basic tools for data manipulation, database management, spatial analysis, and cartographic presentation
