CHM3102 Chemical Kinetics
Course Unit Title
CHM3102 Chemical Kinetics
Course Unit Description
This course unit is designed to equip the students’ knowledge about rate of chemical reaction and the reaction mechanisms for different types of chemical reactions through establishment of rate law, rate constants and order of reaction. The lectures will be supplemented with laboratory experiments which are chosen from the basic principles presented in theory.
Course Objectives
By the end of this course students should be able;
- To introduce the students to concepts and term applied to chemical kinetics.
- To introduce students the skill of determining the rate of reaction and analysing the rate law equations for different types of chemical reactions.
- To give students the conscience of relating reaction conditions, reaction rates and reaction mechanisms.
- To impart skills to students of applying mathematical analysis of the theories rate’s reaction.
- To make the students appreciate the contribution chemical kinetics to specific reactions such as photochemistry.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course unit, the students should be able:
- To define and explain the different concepts related with chemical kinetics.
- To develop rate laws and their integrated forms for different chemical reactions.
- To determine the rate, order, molecularity and rate constant of the reaction,
- To concisely interpret the reaction mechanism from rate of reaction and rate constants.
- To demonstrate the skills acquired in laboratory experiments.
