Course Unit Description

This Course includes a detailed overview of an introduction, definitions, and classifications of polymeric materials, methods and kinetics of polymerization, molecular weight of the polymer, physical and mechanical properties of the polymers and applications of polymers. It is designed to enable students appreciate the immense applications of polymers in everyday life. 

Course objectives

  • The purpose of this course is to provide the student with an opportunity to acquire basic scientific and technological understanding in polymer chemistry, polymer synthesis and polymer properties and applications. The course is an excellent introduction to anyone interested in a career in the polymer industries.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this course,

  • the student is expected to transform the knowledge for sustainable development. Since this course draws ideas from the environment, the student is expected to use the knowledge in environmental management for instance in waste management, recycling of plastics, synthesis of durable plastics, recycling of other polymeric materials.
