Course Unit Description

The course focuses smart grids and electrical networks. The impact of ICT solutions on the smart grid, Power quality and energy efficiency, Integration of renewable energy into the grid. The course covers the main concepts behind smart grids and the transition of the energy grid to low-carbon networks. Students will be able to assess the technical, economic, social and environmental impacts of the different new technologies on the power system, identify challenges and propose solutions.

Learning Outcomes

  • Understand the concept of smart grid networks, explain drivers and challenges associated with the implementation
  • Analyze the impacts of low carbon technologies on the planning and operation of the energy grid
  • Use of power system analysis software to model the impact of different levels of low carbon technology integration and demand and generation flexibility.
