Course Unit Description

The course deals with the principles and foundations of Guidance and Counselling. It underscores the importance of the theories of guidance and counselling, with emphasis on their applicability and implications in secondary school situations. It introduces students to practices and services rendered by the school in the educational vocational and personal guidance of students. It focuses on the tools and techniques of Guidance and Counselling and the role of the classroom teacher in providing services to pupils and parents in the era of rapid socio-economic transformations.

Aim of the Course

The course gives students a foundation and skills in guidance and counselling, to enable them solve psychosocial problems and support delivery of information, and lead a productive career and adult lives.

Course Objectives
The course is designed to;

  • Explore the theories and principle of guidance.
  • Appraise the theories of guidance.
  • Explore the theories and principles of counselling.
  • Appraise the theories of counselling. 
  • Provide knowledge and skills for developing positive behavioural changes in schools.
  • Equip master students with knowledge and skills to foster academic development of their pupils
  • Generate effective decision making, problem solving, and goal-setting skills among students
