Course Unit Description

This course gives a review of propagation of electromagnetic waves in matter, reflection at dielectric & metallic interfaces, polarization and dispersion theory of dielectric media. It also extends to cover the basic physics of lasers and their applications in optics.

Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are to:

  • Describe propagation of electromagnetic waves in matter.
  • Explain reflection and polarization at metallic interfaces and in dielectrics.
  • Describe different types of lasers and apply laser safety techniques.

Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:

  • Describe propagation of electromagnetic waves in matter
  • Explain reflection and polarization at metallic interfaces and in dielectrics
  • Describe different types of lasers and apply laser safety techniques.
