Course Unit Title
PHY7208: Physics of Nanomaterials
Course Unit Description
The Physics of Nanomaterials course provides students with training about an overview to nanoscale physics in conjunction with quantum-size phenomena, matter-photon interactions, and their applications in technology, the course provides learners with a fundamental knowledge of nanoscience and nanotechnology, synthesis and characterization techniques, and real - time applications.
Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are to:
- Explain the fundamental physical principles that govern the properties of condensed matter, particularly the role of dimensionality in the mechanical, thermal, optical, electrical, and magnetic properties of materials.
- Combine quantum physics, solid state physics, and atomic-molecular physics to study and model nanomaterial properties.
- Acquire good command on the size and shape-controlled synthesis of nanomaterials and their future applications in industry.
- Understand the physical foundation for novel phenomena that occur when an item or device's linear size is reduced to less than a micrometer.
- Describe the fundamentals of newly developed characterisation techniques for imaging and analysis of nanostructures and nanomaterials.
- Understand the principles of functioning of nanoelectronic and nanophotonic devices and be able to explain them.
- Do independent research on cutting-edge nanomaterials science and technology, and to write a research paper or literature review.
Course Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- Explain the effects of quantum confinement on the electronic structure and corresponding physical, electrical, optical and chemical properties of materials at nanoscale.
- Identify appropriate synthesis technique to synthesize quantum nanostructures of desired size, shape and surface properties.
- Characterize and correlate properties of nanostructures with their size, shape and surface characteristics.
- Design independent research on cutting-edge nanomaterials science and technology, and write a research paper or review literature.
