PHY7204: Advanced Solid State Physics
Course Unit Title
PHY7204: Advanced Solid State Physics
Course Unit Description
This course builds on undergraduate Solid State Physics. The course will cover contents starting with the band structure of electrons, the electron-phonon interactions and electron-electron interactions. Then, cooperative phenomena of ferromagnetism and superconductivity will be given. Finally, a brief treatment of surface physics will be presented.
Course Objectives
The objectives of the course are to:
- Determine band structures in metals and semi-conductors.
- Discuss the electrical conductivity in metals and semi-conductors.
- Discuss cooperative phenomena in ferromagnetic materials and superconductors.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of the course, the students should be able to:
- Explain band structures in metals and semi-conductors, and apply them in physical
- situations.
- Determine electrical conductivity of metals and semi-conductors
- Describe cooperative phenomena as applied to ferromagnetic and superconductive materials.
