PHY3106 MATERIALS SCIENCE
Course Unit Title
PHY3106 MATERIALS SCIENCE
Course Unit Description
This course is offered to final year undergraduate physics students. The course covers mechanical properties, corrosion and degradation of materials such as iron. It considers the processing and properties of ceramics, polymers and composites. This course forms a very good background for the graduate course in materials science. The course requires one to have undertaken classes in Properties of Matter, Heat and Thermodynamic.
Course Objectives
By the end of the course, the student should be able to
- Classify materials according to their properties
- Explain corrosion effects in metals
- Use phase diagrams to characterize materials
- Give applications of ceramics, composites and polymers
- Reinforce some materials for specific uses
- Perform experiments linking theory to practical aspect
