Course Unit Description
This is a first course in solar energy with the aim of providing basic principles for research in solar energy at a higher level. The course is divided into two parts: solar radiation fundamentals and solar energy utilization
Course Objectives
- By the end of the course, the student should be able to
- Describe the fundamentals and main characteristics of energy sources and their applications
- Explain the technological basis for harnessing renewable energy sources
- Describe the main components of renewable energy systems
- Design energy systems that meet specific energy demands and are environmentally feasible
Expected Learning Outcomes
- By the end of the course, students should be able to
- Explain the spectral distribution of solar energy
- Analyse thermal conversion of energy resources with respect to the different surfaces
- Explain photovoltaic conversion of solar energy
- Design solar thermal panels and solar heating systems
- Advise the general public about the most efficient ways of solar energy utilization
- Perform experiments to link theory to practical aspects
