Course Unit Description

This is a first course in solar energy with the aim of providing basic principles for research in solar energy at a higher level. The course is divided into two parts: solar radiation fundamentals and solar energy utilization

Course Objectives

  • By the end of the course, the student should be able to
  • Describe the fundamentals and main characteristics of energy sources and their applications
  • Explain the technological basis for harnessing renewable energy sources
  • Describe the main components of renewable energy systems
  • Design energy systems that meet specific energy demands and are environmentally feasible

Expected Learning Outcomes

  • By the end of the course, students should be able to
  • Explain the spectral distribution of solar energy
  • Analyse thermal conversion of energy resources with respect to the different surfaces
  • Explain photovoltaic conversion of solar energy
  • Design solar thermal panels and solar heating systems
  • Advise the general public about the most efficient ways of solar energy utilization
  • Perform experiments to link theory to practical aspects
