Course Unit Description
Management Information System (MIS) is a system or process that provides information needed to manage organizations effectively. Management Information systems are considered to be a subset of the overall internal controls’ procedures in a business, which cover the application of people, documents, technologies, and procedures used by management Accountants, Human Resource Managers, Marketing & Production Managers, etc to solve business problems such as costing of a product, service or a business-wide strategy.
Management Information Systems are distinct from regular Information Systems in that they are used to analyze other Information Systems applied in operational activities in the organization. Academically, the term is commonly used to refer to the group of information management methods tied to the automation or support of human decision making, e.g. Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems, and Executive Information Systems, etc.
Topics covered will include Computers and Information Processing, Computer-Based Information Systems components, Executive Information Systems, Management Information Systems, Decision Support Systems, Expert Systems, and Teleprocessing Systems among other.
Course Objectives
This course is designed to help students;
- Get good knowledge of computer hardware, software, information processing and Microsoft office suite.
- Explain the components of computer-Based Information Systems (CBIS)
- Differentiate between data and information
- Describe the role of information systems in decision making
- Demonstrate skills and hands-on experience on the use of browsers, search engines, web-pages, and internet in general
- Exhibit in-depth knowledge of support tools such as Decision Support Systems (DSS), Expert Systems (ES), Executive Information Systems (EIS), Management Information Systems (MIS), and Teleprocessing Systems (TS).
- Demonstrate awareness of the Ethical and Social Issues in Information Systems.
Learning Outcomes
On completion of this course, you will have knowledge and understanding of:
- management concepts principles and skills from a people, finance, marketing and organizational perspectives
- the development of appropriate organizational policies and strategies within a changing context to meet stakeholder interests
- information systems as they relate to organizational contexts and how to learn from failure
- Key tools and techniques for the analysis and design of information systems, including their human and organizational as well as technical aspects.
