Course Unit Title

MID8202 Design of Irrigation and Drainage Structures

Side Navigation

Course Unit Description

The course will cover design, construction, and maintenance of irrigation systems, water storage, conveyance structures, and water control structures. It also handles various water management systems namely surface and pressurized irrigation methods including principles of irrigation and drainage tertiary unit design. It extends to include application of software tools in modelling and simulations.

Course Objectives

  • To understand the basic principles and requirement for the design of irrigation and drainage structures and systems;
  • To explain the criteria for selection of appropriate irrigation and drainage methods under different physical and agricultural circumstances.
  • To discuss the procedure for making the preliminary layout and design of a gravity irrigation and drainage network at tertiary level.

Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, the students are able to:

  • Design pressurized and surface irrigation schemes
  • Select the appropriate type of structure for irrigation and drainage networks, to establish the boundary conditions and to prepare a preliminary hydraulic design
  • Select appropriate irrigation and drainage methods under different physical and agricultural circumstances.
  • Make a preliminary layout and design of a gravity irrigation and drainage network at tertiary level
