MED4102: Clinical methods in Surgery
Course Unit Description
This course introduces the students to clinical clerkship in surgery. Students will spend most of the time on the wards participating in patient care. Emphasis will be on mastering clinical skills particularly history taking, examining patients, investigation of patients, interpretation of laboratory results and essential surgical procedures, setting a patient management plan and communication to the patient including counselling.
Course objectives
By the end of this course, students should be able to;
- Develop skills in assessing a surgical patient and identifying surgical emergencies
- Describe the process of outpatient and in-patient care
- Develop skills in carrying out essential surgical procedures
- Describe the principles of managing surgical emergencies
- Develop skills in palliative care
