Course Unit Description
This course acts as an introduction to general microbiology, systematic bacteriology and mycology. The course covers the classification and characteristics of microorganisms. It brings out the characteristics of bacteria and fungi that are responsible for diseases causation. Laboratory techniques on culturing bacteria and fungi are handled.
Course objectives
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:
- Describe the biology of infectious agents
- Describe specific factors in infectious agents responsible for disease.
- Describe laboratory diagnostic procedures and how to best apply them in the management of patients.
- To describe the principles of biosafety and biosecurity in a clinical setting.
