Course Unit Description

This course covers theory and practice in institutional/organizational change and development. It examines intervention strategies (assumptions underlying organizational development strategies) as well as evaluating and institutionalizing system wide change. Students will be taken through issues that address what causes organisations to change, the important role of change agents and change leaders  in  successful  change  programs,  and  how to develop strategies  to  minimise  resistance  and build commitment  to  the  change  program.  Emphasis is placed on sustaining change by building organisational capability involving human resource and organisational practices and processes to sustain the organisation's ability to achieve continuous adaptation and development. The course aims to enable students understand the various instruments used in organizational development processes.  Gain knowledge of the design of key instruments used in such processes.

Learning Outcomes 
By the end of the course students should have:

  • Enhanced understanding of the theoretical developments and their practical application to the field of organizational change and development
  • Confidence development and tools to build a wider skills repertoire for organizational architecturing (solving immediate problems and creating structures for long term development and learning/healthy organization).

  • Knowledge and skills to help organizations become more adaptive and healthier systems.
  • Knowledge and skills organizational members diagnose the current state of organization, clarify desired outcomes and make strategic choices as well as share responsibility for change.
