Course Unit Description

Work activities and employment relationship are critical determinants of contemporary organizational success. The trends of for work have changed with globalization and the information age, creating complexities, but also prospects in employment relations. This course seeks to promote understanding and appreciation of contemporary work dynamics, practices and policies and regulatory regime, with a focus on employment relations; taking both individual and collective aspects of the employment relationship, exploring the various ways and choices available to organizations in managing this relationship to promote organizational success. 

Course Objectives
The course specifically aims to: 

  • Familiarize students with the practical issues confronting today’s workforce and work activities.  
  • Create understanding of current theories, practices and practitioner debates in employment relations management; 
  • Allow students to critically analyze the nature of the relationship between employee-employee, employee-management, unionized employees, and their elected representatives. 
  • Stimulate critical evaluation of current labour policies and laws in national and international employment systems;

Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, students should be able to:

  • Describe the practical issues confronting today’s workforce and work activities.  
  • Explain the current theories, practices and practitioner debates in employment relations management; 
  • Analyze the nature of the relationship between employee-employee, employee-management, unionized employees, and their elected representatives. 
  • Describe the nature and scope of labor laws and rationale of labor laws in organizations within the context of international labor organization visa-viz the labor laws in 
  • Demonstrate skills in managing interpersonal and intra-organisational relationships in the work context and facilitate critical self-reflection to promote career development and organisational progress.
