Course Unit Description

Brief course description

The course focuses on composition and physiology of microbial communities (i.e.bacteria, fungi, algae, protozoa, and other simple eukaryotic organisms) in the environment. The environment in this case means the soil, water, air and sediments covering the planet and will also include the microscopic animals and plants that inhabit these areas. It will also embrace microorganisms that exist in artificial environments such as bioreactors. Emphasis will be particularly on aquatic microorganisms and microorganisms of public health concern. Fundamental microbial principles and processes in applied and environmental microbiology will be tackled.

Course objectives

By the end of the course, students will be able to;

  • Learn about the basic concepts and terminologies used in environmental microbiology
  • Describe the interaction between the different microbes, fish communities and man.
  • Plan and carry out a microbial risk assessment

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, learners should be able to;

  • Understand the basic concepts and terminologies used in environmental microbiology
  • Appreciate the interaction between the different microbes, fish communities and man.
  • Conduct a microbial risk assessment
