Course Unit Description

This course covers aspects of capture fisheries (i.e. marine, brackish and freshwater) emphasizes aspects of freshwater fisheries with linkages to farmed fisheries. It explores the types of fish habitats and their interactions with human activities.  Fish transfers are evaluated in relation to objectives of fisheries management. Challenges of capture fisheries like overfishing, new fish transfers species transfers, eutrophication and pollution among others as well as aspects of fisheries management are also covered.

Learning Objectives
By the end of the course, learners will be able to;

  • Explain the diverse concepts and terminologies under capture fisheries.
  • Learn about the habitats for marine fisheries and fresh water fisheries
  • Understand the challenges and opportunities of the new fish species

Course Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course, learners should demonstrate capacity to:

  • Apply the concepts and terminologies used under wild fisheries
  • Explore existing fish habitat-human activities nexus. 
  • Identify challenges of capture fisheries and propose appropriate fisheries management practices.
