FNE1204 Environmental Sociology

This course looks at environment as a social issue and attempts to explore the interactions between humans and the environment thereby seeking answers to environmental problems and successes from a modern and historical perspective. Reference is made to several published experiences with special focus to developing countries with emphasis on the East African region especially Uganda. 

Course objectives
By the end of the course, students will:

• Be equipped with information on environmental sociological concepts and theories for a deeper understanding of why environmental problems occur and endure. 
• Analyze the systemic relationships between the environment and  society.
• Be able to address the sociological underpinnings of conflicts and inequalities around the world that are  linked to such issues as natural resource use, food, conservation, population, and global climate change.
• Analyze environmental issues in our modern society and apply simple environmental principles to improve daily lives of communities. 

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will have the knowledge and skills to: 

• Apply information on sociological theories and concepts to solving environmental problems.
• Analyze the implications of environmental change for people, communities, flora and wildlife
• Evaluate different policies and other responses that address environmental change.
• Articulate those critical environmental issues in our modern society and ably apply simple environmental principles that improve daily lives.
