Course Unit Description

The course introduces students to the basic understanding of a variety of electrical engineering materials that include dielectrics, magnetic materials, superconductors and their applications.

Course Objectives
The objectives of this course are to enable students to:

  • Understand the properties of various materials used in electrical engineering
  • Identify materials at the extreme ends of the conductivity range, i.e. insulators and superconductors.
  • Understand material response to electrical fields, i.e. polarisation and conduction in dielectrics and select proper material for electrical engineering applications.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to:

  • Indicate engineering aspects of these materials and the metallurgy involved in the production of special electrical materials
  • Explain material response to electric and magnetic fields and appreciate applications and advantages of high temperature superconducting materials
  • Describe materials structure and properties and select suitable materials for engineering applications
