Course Unit Description
The course is designed to introduce students to the best management practices, problems and challenges of Higher education and to the strategies of managing students affairs. The course begins with a treatment of the History of Higher Education in Africa. Emphasis in the first section is on the challenges to Higher Education Managers and the impact of private Higher Education on General Higher Education Provision. The focus then turns to the role of staff in addressing challenges and the role of Higher Education in National Development. Finally, the course examines aspects of managing students’ affairs so that their learning experiences become more meaningful given that students affairs have always been at the heart of education management.
Course objective
- To equip students with knowledge of the fundamental principles in management of contemporary higher education institutions
- To enable students apply theories of educational management to higher education
- To enable students develop ability to plan and organize institutional services, programs and facilities
- To help students Develop capacity and competencies in counseling and directing students on day to day challenges
- Developing ability of candidates to manage students’ recreation in accordance with institutional regulations
Learning Outcomes
Students who complete this course will be able to:

- Articulate the major challenges facing University Education
- Analyze the global forces that impact on Higher Education
- Describe the structure of Modern Higher Education so that they can describe it in the content of various systems
- Demonstrate skills required of a manager in a higher institution of learning
- Eengage students in active learning and extra curricula activities but using resources effectively to achieve institutional missions and goals
- Help students develop coherent values and ethical standards through counseling programmes
- Set and communicate high expectations for student learning and maintain effective communication channels
- Forge educational partnerships that advances student learning and build supportive and inclusive communities through teambuilding
